Natural Gas System Upgrade

Superior Water, Light & Power is upgrading its gas distribution system to ensure long-term safety and reliability. Superior Water, Light and Power and its contractor Hanco Utilities will be upgrading old steel gas mains and services with new MDPE plastic lines in an area bound by N. 18th / N. 21st Streets and Hammond / Hughitt Avenues. Project work is scheduled to begin in early June and be completed by the end of the month.

This project will consist of the replacement of 37 services and approximately 1,100’ of gas main. Newly installed mains and services have additional valving and protections installed on them, increasing safety for our customers.

Our goal is to safely complete the improvements with as few disruptions as possible.

During construction, you can expect the following in your neighborhood:

  • SWL&P employees and contractors working in roadways and yards. Hanco will install the new service lines under the direct supervision of SWL&P and our inspectors.
  • Underground utility locations will be mapped using locator flags and paint.
  • Customers can expect construction work, including holes and trenches, in roadways, alleyways, boulevards and yards. For safety, disturbed areas may be temporarily repaired prior to final restoration.
  • As construction proceeds, parking may be limited to one side of a street or alley or prohibited on both sides of a street or alley during assigned work hours. “No Parking” signs will alert you to any restrictions. Please pay close attention to all roadway and construction area signage the duration of the project.

Natural gas service to your home will be turned off during installation of new service lines. If you are home, SWL&P technicians will be able to restore service and re-light your appliances immediately. If no one is home, a technician will leave the gas off until we’re able to enter to safely restore your service. We’ll leave information on how to contact us to get your service restored as quickly as possible.
